Espresso machine, drip coffee maker, French Press cleaning. Descaling, backflushing, daily and weekly maintenance routines. Extend your machine's life.
Regular cleaning of your coffee machine is critical for both delicious coffee and long machine life. Old coffee oils, limescale buildup, and milk residue eventually ruin the taste and damage the machine. In this guide, you'll find comprehensive cleaning and maintenance methods for every type of coffee machine.
What needs to be done after every use:
After every shot: Knock out the puck, rinse with hot water, wipe with cloth. Remove and wash the basket separately (once daily).
After every shot: Run hot water for 2-3 seconds. Clears coffee residue. At end of day, do a 10-second long flush.
IMMEDIATELY after every use: Purge steam for 2 seconds (expel milk inside), wipe with wet cloth. Cleaning after milk dries is very difficult.
Empty daily. Wash weekly. Prevents bad odors and bacteria growth.
Backflushing is a method that cleans the inside of the group head.
Required materials:
Insert the blind basket into the portafilter. Put the cleaning tablet (or 1/4 teaspoon powder) inside the blind basket.
Insert the portafilter. Press the extraction button for 10 seconds. Stop, wait 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle 5 times.
Remove the portafilter. Repeat the same process 5 times without tablet. No chemical residue should remain.
Soak baskets, portafilter in hot water for 15 minutes. Clean with brush. Rinse.
Backflush Warning
Not all machines are suitable for backflushing. Especially machines without 3-way valves (some entry-level models) should not be backflushed. Check your user manual.
Limescale buildup creates serious problems, especially in hard water areas.

Most fully automatic machines have:
| Program | Frequency | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
| Rinse | Startup/shutdown | Runs water, pre-heating |
| Milk cleaning | After every milk use | Milk residue in tubes |
| Tablet cleaning | When machine requests | Brew unit cleaning |
| Descaling | When machine requests | Internal systems |
Cleaning Tablet
Use the tablet recommended by your machine's brand. Jura tablets for Jura machines, Philips tablets for Philips. Different formulas can give different results.
Method 1: Vinegar (OK for drip coffee makers)
Method 2: Commercial descaler
Discard coffee grounds (don't pour down drain, it clogs). Trash or compost.
Remove the plunger. Separate all parts (filter discs, spring).
Wash all parts with hot soapy water. Brush the filter mesh.
Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue ruins coffee taste.
Leave to air dry or wipe dry. Don't leave wet.
No Detergent
Never use detergent in a moka pot. Aluminum is porous so soap residue gets absorbed. Hot water only, and baking soda if needed.
Descaling is critical for Nespresso and other pod machines.
